The congregation and friends of St. Andrew’s enjoyed the annual Summer Barbecue
on July 2nd. The cooking was done outside by some of the St. Andrew’s men, but
fortunately, Nolte Hall offered a welcome shelter from the scorching July heat for
dining and the other activities.

Among these activities was a “kinder and gentler” type of auction
for prizes ranging from a handmade quilt to childrens’ books, to housewares,
jewelry and gift certificates; and even a beautiful rock sculpture by Elsie Atkinson!
Rather than have a traditional silent auction, where people would top each others’
bids on items, we sold “chance” tickets, which folks could deposit as many
as they liked in corresponding baskets of items that were to their liking. The tickets
were drawn and winners were announced by the children of St. Andrew’s--a few of
whom ought to seriously consider getting an agent! ;)
And...As a very special treat; The New City Parish Gospel Choir gave us a performance
of some of the most uplifting music that can be found today. Their singing is always
superb, and they’ve been entertaining and inspiring audiences all over
Los Angeles--and beyond; and we were truly blessed to have them at our barbecue!
The food was at the usual St. Andrew’s standard of excellence, with
members providing homemade side dishes and desserts to complement the burgers and
hot dogs. Many, many thanks to everybody who cooked, brought food and prizes, set
up tables and invited guests.
